Featured Artisan: Shelly of Handmade Creations

Handmade Creations by Shelly - Featured Artisan!

I opened my shop four years ago this August. For the past 10 years I have been selling my products at Craft Fairs and some of my fellow craft friends told me about Etsy. I had never sold my items on-line and it was a big step for me.

Over the past four years I have been so lucky to have been guided by so many wonderful shop owners as to the ins and outs of on-line shops. I am thrilled to say that I sell World Wide.

To begin my story I want to… share some personal info. I’m a native Southern California girl, married toJohn (retired Atty. and Veteran Combat Corpsman with Fox 2/7 1968) who supports my passion 110%.

Plans for the Week: July 23 - 28

Share/Bookmark
This may be a very low production week. I'm dealing with a massive ear infection that has spread to my jaw and neck, so between the pain, the fever, and the very limited "liquid-like" diet that I'm having to deal with, I will probably not feel like doing much of anything. I would like to focus mostly on getting the rest of my inventory database keyed into the computer. I still have all my jewelry and jewelry parts to key in, as well as all the yarn that I have in stock, but haven't used on any current projects as of yet. The yarn won't take me long, but the jewelry parts and jewelry will take a fair amount of time since I didn't keep very detailed records when I made the jewelry, so I will have to match parts to the finished pieces physically. I also have four more of those plastic organizational boxes to go through and write down all the parts in there. Once I get all of those in the system, I will probably start on buttons, but they are more of an eventual thing since a lot of my projects don't use buttons as of yet. If I get bored with the database or just need a break from it, I will have my parchment paper for my product labels by tomorrow afternoon, so I'll be able to start printing them off and packaging things up more professionally. But the actual packaging will have to wait until I have taken photos of my items for Artfire. Well, my brain is starting to go out of focus from all the medications, so I will close before I make absolutely no sense.

7/21/12 - What I Did This Week

Share/Bookmark
This is going to be a rather short post because I honestly haven't lifted a crochet hook or a set of knitting needles all week.  In the last month or so of being pregnant, I pretty much became listless.  I was still making things, but I couldn't find the mental capacity to focus on keying in the new parts and products into the database for accurate pricing.  Since Seth arrived last week, I've been able to focus a little better, and I've been playing "Catch-Up."

I've managed to key most of yarn-type parts into the database, and the majority of my yarn items are keyed in as well.  I do still have a box or two of items that need to be added, but they are in the studio which is currently blocked by a stack of boxes that I am not permitted to lift at the moment, so they'll have to wait.  My jewelry is not entered in the system yet, but neither are the parts that make the jewelry.  They should have been keyed in a long time ago, but I had to go through all my beads and rings and such and clean out the pieces that I'd never use before I could go keying them into the database of parts that I will be using.

All in all....I think I'll be crocheting next week because I'm sick of data entry.  LOL.

What To Do, What To Do: Week of 7/16 to 7/21

Share/Bookmark
My to-do list is really quite long because I'm always thinking of new things I want to start or work on long before I finish other things.  And here lately, with three children fighting for my attention, I'm seeming to get much less done than I am coming up with doing.

This week, I would like to get a few more of my cotton skeins crocheted into washcloths, make-up removers, utility scrubbers, etc.  That's the main thing to get done because my mom says that my stock that I sent to the Market is already running low, so I need to replenish it to keep the income flowing.  Since I finally have a new printer, I'd like to work on my label design.  And I have one personal item that I am crocheting at the moment that I'd like to get another skein of yarn added to, and that is Seth's blanket.  It's a modified granny square blanket, and I'm making some fair leeway on it, but it's really hard to get anything done with this face looking at you all the time.

I mean, really, who could resist that?  Ignore the floor clutter in the background.  I'm still not recovered enough to clean up toys and dress-up clothes that Anna and Sammy get out.  They'll clean up a few, but being toddlers, they are easily distracted and move along before finishing, but it's alright.  It'll get cleaned up eventually.  And yes, he is wearing pink.  It's clean and it fits.

I think I may try to crochet a few of these little guys up this week since they are quick and easy projects.
Other than that, I'm leaving my time pretty open since the kids are always so random on when they want to spend time with me.

Featured Artisan: LA Jewelry Design

Share/Bookmark

All beads are created by me, Lea Avroch, in my New York studio!

Unable to work following a spine disability, I started making jewelry over 15 years ago, hence the name.

I had been making jewelry for many years and would often find myself wishing I had a particular bead. So when I found out about a beginner lampwork class at the local art league I jumped on it and was immediately hooked. I've never looked back.

While I still make the occasional piece(s) of jewelry, my focus is on making beads. I get inspiration mostly from nature; ocean, sand, beach, flowers, etc. It's such joy to open the kiln in the morning to see the finished beads from the day before.

It is my hope that my beads will inspire your creativity in your jewelry.
